2021 Odo Red Wine
90 Points | James Suckling
"Aromas of wild blackberries, dark cherries and sarsaparilla. The palate is medium-bodied with soft tannins and balanced acidity, giving notes of raspberries, hibiscus and spices. Soft, with a fine structure and bright fruit. Drink now."
Each lot was aged individually for 1 year before being blended from 225 liter barrique into one 1500 liter foudre. The wine was then aged an additional 22 months prior to bottling in July of 2024. All lots were spontaneously fermented with minimal additions. The best barrels from each variety were blended to produce the final flagship wine. The resulting wine is elegant and subtle while retaining a powerful structure and length.
Odo, the Count of Champagne and Aumale (later Albemarle) lived from c. 1030-1115. He famously accompanied his brother-in-law, William the Conqueror during the Norman conquest of England. He was briefly imprisoned by King William II in 1095 after a failed rebellion sought to place Odo’s son, Stephen(see our Estate Merlot) on the throne. He outlived his wife, Adeliza(see our partnering semi-sweet white wine), but together they had three children; Stephen, Judith, and Adeliza II. Modern historians cite Odo as the primogenitor of the Grace (La Gras) family.
